Ocean overwash on NC 12, Cape Hatteras schools closed Friday

After first announcing closure of NC 12 north of Rodanthe early Friday morning due to a dune breach and ocean overwash, the North Carolina Department of Transportation later updated the closure to extend the closure to the entire area of roadway between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe.

It was noted the closure is being made as a safety precaution due to moderate to severe ocean overwash in several places along NC 12.

Dare County Schools also announced Friday morning that due to unsafe road conditions, Cape Hatteras Elementary School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School will be closed for the day for staff and students.
