UPDATE: National Weather Service forecast shows increased snowfall totals

The National Weather Service forecast was updated Thursday morning, February 20 to reflect anticipation of increased snowfall amounts across northeastern North Carolina Thursday night into Friday morning.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for nearly all areas in northeastern North Carolina and most are now expected to see anywhere from as little as a dusting in some beach areas to 1-2” in Manteo and Stumpy Point, 3-4” in Engelhard and Swan Quarter and 4-6” possible in Elizabeth City, Columbia, Belhaven and Plymouth. Hatteras and Ocracoke islands may see none.

The changeover from rain to snow is expected to begin from 4-7 p.m. in Belhaven, 8-10 p.m. for Columbia and Swan Quarter and from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. for Engelhard, Manteo and beach towns.

A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for the Pamlico Sound area, including Ocracoke Island and southern Hatteras Island.

Strong north to northeast winds with gusts up to 45 mph along the coast have been forecast.

Due to weather concerns, Mattamuskeet schools dismissed students at noon, Tyrrell County Schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. and Currituck County Schools and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will dismiss two hours early Thursday.
