He attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida and the University of Tasmania in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia where he studied biology, anthropology with a concentration in archaeology and nursing.

Alexander moved back to Edenton in 2016 so that he could assist his parents. He is currently living in Elizabeth City, where he works as an armed security officer for the U.S. Coast Guard. He has published four books and is currently co-authoring a fiction novel with his oldest son.
