Sandlot ball tournament set for March 8 and 9
The 4th Annual Cape Hatteras Sandlot Tournament is scheduled for Friday, March 8 and Saturday March 9.
This year’s tournament features Manteo High School, Currituck County High School, Bear Grass Charter and host Cape Hatteras Secondary.
This year, girls high school softball games will be played between Bear Grass Charter and Cape Hatteras.
The tournament welcomes back the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation. The tournament’s platform promotes cancer awareness with its “Knock Cancer Out of the Park” event.
Prior to the championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m., all six participating teams will gather on the baseball field to help raise awareness to how many people are affected by the disease.
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation will also raise awareness and funds for its mission of supporting island families who are battling cancer. The foundation will be taking donations, running a 50/50 raffle and selling copies of its cookbooks.
Additional events are scheduled around this tournament.
A canned food drive benefits Hatteras Island Food Pantry, which is across NC 12 from Cape Hatteras Secondary. The winter and early spring are difficult times for a lot of island families.
The tournament does not charge teams a fee to play. Instead, players and coaches are asked to bring two non-perishable food items for the food pantry. Those attending the tournament are encouraged to contribute to the food drive.
A silent auction will benefit the Cape Hatteras baseball program. The auction includes various baseball and island-themed items, some from local artisans. Bids are taken all day Friday and Saturday. The auction closes at the end of the fourth inning of the championship game on Saturday.
