Manteo boys win 1A conference track championship

Manteo High School boys won the Albemarle Athletic Conference track and field team championship Tuesday, defeating teams from Camden County, Gates County, Perquimans County, Washington County and John A. Holmes in Edenton.

First place finishes by J’Veon Tate and Trent Jones helped Manteo boys secure their title. Tate won the shot put with a 40-09 toss and Jones was the 800 meter run champion with a time of 2:12.32.

In the girls competition, Manteo’s Jania Charity earned a first place conference championship with her triple jump of 29 feet 1.5 inches to help pace the Redskins to a fourth place finish. Charity also earned second place in the long jump with a 13 foot 7 inch leap.

Other notable performances for Manteo boys included the Manteo boys 4×200 meter relay team of Mekhi Bias, Dylan Sharp, Dakota Meekins and Claveon Rice winning that event with a time of 1:35.53. In the 4X800 boys relay, Jones teamed up with William Pendleton, Weston Smith and Landon Taylor to produce a winning time of 9:08.75.

In a post-meet ceremony, Manteo head track Melissa Mann and Camden head track coach Victoria Black were presented with Conference Coach of the Year plaques for their respective boys and girls teams.

Several Manteo athletes will advance to the NCHSAA East Region 1A East meet on Friday, May 10 at John A. Holmes High School in Edenton. Field events start at 12:30 p.m. and running events start at 1 p.m. Winners there will advance to the state meet on Saturday, May 18 at NC A&T State University in Greensboro​.
