In the ring: Outer Banks Boxing Club
A large, enthusiastic crowd gathered at The Gym to witness the final boxing events of the year, sponsored by the Outer Banks Boxing Club. Participants of all ages are shown basic boxing skills, such as footwork, balance and hand placement. Once these skills are developed, the participants are allowed into the ring for further development.
Local boxing legend David Derby is one of the trainers for the boxing club. In order to be a sanctioned coach for boxing, 20 hours a year of training are required. Derby has met these qualifications.
The Gym has leased the space and time for the boxing club matches. This was their third match at The Gym, said Matt Costa, one of the owners of The Gym.
Participants are required to wear headgear, mouthguards and 8-10 oz. gloves.
