Basketball: Cape Hatteras takes two from Mattamuskeet

On Thursday night, Feb. 10, both Cape Hatteras Secondary basketball teams defeated Mattamuskeet in the Buxton gymnasium.

The Cape Hatteras girls defeated Mattamuskeet 42 to 22. The Cape Hatteras boys defeated the visiting Lakers 59 to 41.

In the girls match, Cape Hatteras led from the opening minutes against the dedicated Mattamuskeet Lady Lakers.

Coach Earl Fountain played the team’s starting lineup in the first and third quarters. In the second and fourth quarters, eight more Lady Hurricanes took the court.

According to the team-posted scoring on MaxPreps, Kylie Phillips contributed 16 points to the team total. She swished the net with two threes. Chloe Flythe scored eight points, including one three. Emma DelMonte scored seven points along with a three. Eight Lady Hurricanes scored.

For Mattamuskeet, Heather Smith and Jaila Williams both scored eight points, with Williams connecting for two threes.

In the boys varsity matchup, Cape Hatteras Hurricanes led at the end of the first quarter by seven and at half-time by 16. Cape Hatteras outscored Mattamuskeet by four points in the third, but the Lakers won the fourth quarter by three points.

Game high scoring went to Osmar Padilla with 18.

Scoring in double digits for the Lakers were Jaiden Johnson with 13 and Kalen Simpson with 11.

Eleven Cape Hatteras players entered the game with eight scoring. Mattamuskeet players numbered 10 with seven scoring.

This week, the Atlantic Conference Basketball Tournament will be played on Wednesday and Friday nights, with games at 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys. The final games of the regular season were played on Tuesday night, Feb. 15.
