Weekly Devotion – John 6:54

By Mike Caton

John 6:54, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

There’s a show on TV called The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Though I’ve never seen it, I’m sure they have a pile of good food. When you think about it, some of it might be pretty simple, it is hard to beat a piece of fried chicken done right. I was talking with a buddy last night about Krispy Kremes when they come right out of the fryer. But there is no doubt there is some crazy stuff you have never heard of. Exotic foods from far off places, that are no doubt delicious. But every one of those foods is only temporary, it might be good, even satisfying for the moment, but eventually you will be hungry again.

Jesus said if we eat his flesh and drink his blood, we will have eternal life and at the last day, we will be raised up. Again, what Jesus offers us is eternally satisfying, it does not just fill our bellies, it fills our soul. This commitment to Jesus, and that is what he is talking about, changes every area of our lives, it transforms our hearts and minds, it leads us closer to God. But we cannot have these promises unless we are willing to partake of Jesus himself. These promises that Jesus gives are to those who are willing to accept them, to those who are willing to commit themselves. But Jesus offers himself freely to anyone.

The first day of every week, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, a memorial to the death of Jesus. The bread representing his body and the juice representing his blood. Since the pandemic, we’ve been using pre-packed emblems. And honestly, the bread is awful, about like Styrofoam. But it’s the best thing I’ve ever ate.

Father, thank you for this reminder. In Jesus’ name, amen.
