History for Lunch presentation to feature shad and herring fisheries of Albemarle Sound

The Museum of the Albemarle will hold its monthly History for Lunch on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at noon in the Gaither Auditorium. David Bennett, curator of maritime history with the North Carolina Maritime Museums, will explore the development of shad and herring fisheries in the Albemarle Sound.

The sound and its tributaries were once home to one of North Carolina’s largest commercial fisheries. Bennett will make special reference to technological development in these fisheries, from their earliest days during the colonial period to their decline in the 20th century.

The museum will offer the History for Lunch program in-person and through Zoom. To attend the lecture virtually, register in advance at bit.ly/3VCjVrQ to receive the link. Registration is not required to attend the lecture in person.

The virtual program is supported by Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle.

The Museum of the Albemarle is located at 501 S. Water Street in Elizabeth City. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sundays and state holidays.
