Shortfin mako shark retention now zero

On July 11 for North Carolina waters, retention of shortfin mako sharks by commercial or recreational watermen moved to zero. The closure was effective July 5 for federal waters.

The closure affects commercial fishermen using longline, bottom longline or gillnet gear with highly migratory species permits; any recreational fishermen who target or catch shortfin mako sharks; and dealers who buy or sell sharks or shark products.

The state action and a link to the federal action is contained in North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation FB 41-2022.
