Jerome “Jerry” James Ryscavage Jr.

Jerome “Jerry” James Ryscavage Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 19, 2024 at St. Catherine’s Village, Madison, MS. Prior to his move to Mississippi, he was a long-time resident of Manteo, NC and before that Oakland, MD. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary McCleskey Ryscavage. He is survived by his brother Paul (Karen), son Jefferson (Alison), daughters Kathryn Tillack (Bob), Susan McCullouch (Brent), grandchildren Jefferson, Alexander, Kathryn, John Murry and Boyd.

Jerry was born February 4,1938 in Putnam, Connecticut. He graduated from Central Connecticut Teachers College and received his masters at The Ohio State University where he met Mary. He was a star athlete in both high school and college. Upon graduation, Jerry completed the Naval Officer Candidate School and married Mary on the same day. The couple was stationed in Key West and Bermuda. Upon their return stateside the family moved to College Park, Maryland where Jerry received his Doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Maryland. He then began his career with the Garrett County Board of Education. Jerry retired as the Superintendent of Garrett County schools in 1997. Upon retirement Mary and Jerry enjoyed many years living in Manteo at the Outer Banks of NC and spending time with family. Memorial services were held in Ridgeland, MS at Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church. Jerry will be interred in Americus, GA with Mary at a later date.
