Virginia Pledger Ligon

Greenville – Virginia Pledger Ligon, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Mrs. Ligon was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late Floyd Richard Pledger and Edna Ruth Gaskins. She was a member of Grace Church, Greenville, NC. She loved God, her children, and her country more than anything. She was an Assistant with the Clerk of Court in Dare County for seven and a half years and a licensed Real Estate Broker for forty-six years.

Mrs. Ligon is survived by her daughter, Anna Benitez and husband, Scott; brothers, Richard E. Pledger and Frederick Thomas Pledger and Karen; grandchildren, Rhiannon Torres, Christopher Jones Ballance, Thomas Hayes Gillahan, and Brittney Reagan Gillahan; great-grandchildren, Jayden Ballance, Kenleigh Ballance, and Emma Gillahan; step-children, Colin Ligon, Samantha Stenger, Robert A. Young III, Melissa Young Allen, and Vernon R. Sullivan Jr.; sisters-in-law, Rita Pledger and Linda Pledger; several step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ligon Jr.; daughter, Natalie Ballance Cologgi; son, Christopher Thomas Ballance; and brothers, Samuel W. Pledger, “Capt. Doogie” Brian D. Pledger, Kenneth W. Pledger, and Robert Lassiter.

She called Greenville, NC, her home for the past 20 years where she made many lasting friendships. She had lifelong family on the Outer Banks, NC. She always had a smiling face and loved visiting with neighbors. She would like to extend a special “Thank You” to: Dr. Benjamin “Clay” Myers, Dr. Adam Gabriel, and the Staff at Kinetics Physical Therapy; her praying and caring neighbors; and special friends, Elaine Anderson, Martha George, Iva Whedbee Gregory, and Marie Cunningham along with all her friends, family, and caretakers through her battle with cancer.
