Community invited to radio control flying event to aid Beach Food Pantry

Members of local radio control model aviation club the Dare County Radio Control Flyers will be holding a family-friendly flying event at their field in Manns Harbor on Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Local residents of all ages are invited to attend, and any person attending will have an opportunity to fly one of the club’s radio control aircraft!” noted the event announcement.

There is no charge to attend or fly at this event, however the club is requesting that all attendees to bring at least one non-perishable food item or a comparable cash donation per person, all of which will be donated to the Beach Food Pantry to aid local residents in need.

“This event is our way of educating the public about the hobby of model aviation, while giving back to our community” stated club president Jim Davis. This will be the fourth consecutive year for this public event, and the club hopes to also attract new members by demonstrating what a rewarding, educational, affordable and fun activity flying model aircraft can be for persons of all ages.

“Local residents wanting to experience the excitement of flying a radio control model airplane at this event will be able to do so under the supervision of one of the club’s flight instructors,” stated the announcement. “Upon completing their introductory flight, participants will automatically be entered into a no-cost raffle with three complete ready-to-fly model airplane prizes, with a combined value of over $1,194, being awarded. The winners will be selected at the end of the day by an exclusive drawing of only those who participated in the day’s flying.”

The club will also be providing attendees with lunch consisting of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and beverages at no cost.

A second raffle will also be held for those interested in purchasing tickets at $10 each, or three for $20. Two radio-control airplane prizes will be awarded for this raffle, with a combined value of $678.

The club’s flying field is located at 1521 Link Road in Manns Harbor, and is accessible through the entrance of the Outer Banks Gun Club.

“Dare County Radio Control Flyers is a self-supporting, nonprofit organization that is always searching for new members to share their passion for aeromodeling. The club, chartered in 1989 by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, promotes radio control model aviation as a recreational activity on the Outer Banks and surrounding area. Current membership of the club includes those from a variety of educational and life-experience backgrounds, from 5 to 93 years of age,” the announcement continued. “Club membership is open to anyone, regardless of experience level, and to encourage families to enjoy the hobby together, family memberships at a discounted rate are also offered.”

Further information about the club or this event is available at dcrcf.club, the Dare County Radio Control Flyers Facebook page, or by contacting them by phone or text message at 252-656-2FLY (2359).
