Cape Hatteras Secondary’s volleyball and soccer teams in state playoffs

Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s volleyball and boys soccer teams advanced to the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s State Championship playoffs.

Both teams finished the regular season on top of conferences, earning the home advantage.

The volleyball team finished the season with an 8-1 conference record and a 10-4 overall season record.

The soccer team turned in a 5-0 in the Atlantic 5 Conference season and a 6-6 overall record. The Cape Hatteras team drew a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

On Saturday night, Nov. 3, Cape Hatteras played Franklin Academy, Wake Forest, a public charter school. The match was played on the Cape Hatteras soccer pitch on Buxton Back Road.

At the end of the first half, the two teams were tied at 2.

Cape Hatteras scored first with a goal by Austin Hooper with less than four minutes played.

Franklin scored a goal with a shot by Luis Peters with 10 minutes gone.

Hatteras took the lead again after 20 minutes. Victor Caldera scored the second goal.

Franklin tied with seven minutes remaining on the clock in the half. Max Bademian, a sophomore, scored the tying goal.

In the second, Franklin scored two goals in the first seven minutes. Carter Diehl scored his first goal and Peters his second. Cape Hatteras defended the goal for more than 20 minutes before Bademian scored.

Caldera scored a goal on a penalty kick with seven minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Brayan Garcia made numerous saves during the match.

The final score was Franklin Academy 5 and Cape Hatteras 2.

On the volleyball court, Cape Hatteras won its first round contest 3-0.

The Cape Hatteras volleyball players soundly defeated South Creek, Robersonville, in three sets, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-3.

In the last set, Yoselyn Gabriel, a freshman, served for 14 consecutive points in the third game. Her serves brought the third set to match point. The match was played Oct. 23.

In the second volleyball round, Cape Hatteras Secondary faced Camden County High School.

Camden won the match in three sets, 25-18, 27-25, 25-10. Camden found empty spaces in the Cape Hatteras defense.

The second set went three service rounds before Camden pulled ahead by two points. The score was tied seven times, the last time at 25. Brooke Gurganus, a Camden senior, scored the winning points.

Cape Hatteras Secondary’s volleyball team has six seniors, who worked through the 2018 summer to produce a stellar conference season and a two-round run in the state playoffs.

This year’s seniors are Betty Chen, Nyah Machie, Finni Harmon and captains Morgan Fairbanks, Maya Damitio and Jillian Webster.
