UPDATE: Body recovered by Shallowbag Bay Club dock in Manteo

The body of a man was recovered by the Roanoke Island Fire Department early Wednesday afternoon in the waters by the docks at the Shallowbag Bay Club and Marina in Manteo. A Manteo Police Department spokesperson says they will not be releasing the name of the man until a family member has had a chance to make a positive identification.

Manteo Police Chief Vance Haskett identified the deceased as a 27-year-old white male who they believe lived on a sailboat that was docked near where the body was found. Police say the man, originally from West Virginia, has lived in Manteo for some time.

The boat and a car believed to be associated with the decedent has been impounded during the investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner. Until the investigation is complete, police won’t release details surrounding the death, but say at this point there is no indication the public is at risk.
