Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

Exodus 33:13, “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”

Moses is concerned about who is going with him to lead these people to the promised land. He knows that he cannot do it alone, and he knows he cannot do it with mere human help. And Moses knows the only place he can turn is to God. And what does Moses ask of God here?

Teach me your ways, so that I may know you. The more I think about that, the more that ought to be the prayer of each and every person who calls themselves a follower of God. It is easy for us to simply say we love the Lord, we trust him, we have faith in him, and so forth. But we need to want to know him more and more. We need to want to know more of his word, his will, his plan not just for us but for the whole world. And the only way we can do that is to know God more.

But do we really want to know God more, as Moses did? We all want to continue to find favor with God, but are we willing to live in the ways that will put that smile on his face? We must remember that God already loves us, and that there is nothing we can do that will make him love us any more or any less. And we know that we cannot do enough good to earn our salvation. But the way we live our lives tells the story of the commitment we have to him. Our lives should be lived to show our appreciation and love to the Lord. We are his people, and we must act like it.

Father, teach me your ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.
