Dare County announces closures due to winter storm

Due to impacts from the winter storm, all Dare County offices will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Offices will reopen Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions, noted a news release from Dare County.
Should there be any changes to the schedules below, that information will be posted on DareNC.gov/WinterStorm.
Dare County Public Works
Dare County Public Works has announced that there will be no trash collection on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Regular trash collection is expected to resume Thursday, Jan. 23.
The Dare County C&D Landfill, the Buxton Transfer Station and the Manteo Recycle Yard will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. These sites are expected to reopen on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Dare County Parks & Recreation
Fessenden Center
All indoor and outdoor activities at the Fessenden Center – including open gym, basketball practices, fitness classes, youth dance, adult bingo, youth guitar and pickleball – in Buxton are canceled through Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Basketball practices at the elementary school are canceled as well.
All programs and activities are expected to resume on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions. For more information, contact the Fessenden Center at 252-475-5650.
Northern Beach Division:
All indoor and outdoor activities for the Northern Beach Division – including open gym, basketball practice, the after-school program and pickleball – have been canceled through Wednesday, Jan. 22.
All programs and activities are expected to resume on Thursday, January 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions. For more information, contact the Northern Beach office at 252-475-5850.
Roanoke Island/Mainland Division:
All indoor and outdoor activities at the Roanoke Island/Mainland Division – including open gym, basketball practice and pickleball – have been canceled from Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. and continuing through Wednesday, Jan. 22.
All programs and activities are expected to resume on Thursday, January 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions. For additional information, contact the Roanoke Island/Mainland Division office at 252-475-5910.
Dare County Public Services
Transportation
All rides with the Dare County Transportation Service are canceled until further notice beginning Wednesday, Jan. 22. For more information, contact the Transportation Department office at 252-475-5640.
Virginia S. Tillett Community Center
All scheduled programming at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center – including fitness classes – have been canceled and the gym will remain closed through Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.
All programs and activities are expected to resume on Thursday, January 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions. For additional information, contact the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center at 252-475-9270.
Baum Senior Center
All scheduled programming at the Baum Senior Center – including fitness classes – has been canceled through Wednesday, Jan. 22.
All programs and activities are expected to resume on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions. For more information, call the Baum Senior Center at 252-475-5635.
Dare County Library
The following library programs are canceled:
- All Wednesday Storytimes at the Manteo Library (Wednesday, Jan. 22)
- Tech Time at the Hatteras Library, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Wednesday, Jan. 22)
- Pop-Up Library Event at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building (including the All Ages Storytime Program), 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23
Thursday Storytimes at the Kill Devil Hills Library and Hatteras Library are contingent on driving conditions. A decision will be made Thursday morning, Jan. 23.
“Manteo During World War II,” scheduled to be presented by LeVern Parker Davis at the Manteo Library on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., will be rescheduled to a later date.

Dare County Regional Airport
The Dare County Regional Airport will be temporarily out of service on Wednesday, Jan. 22, until the snow has melted. The airport is expected to reopen on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025.
