The Manteo Planning Board has taken the first step in updating the town’s 20 year plan. The board voted to begin the process of establishing a steering committee to help review the existing plan and identify future direction.

The 20 year plan was first established in 1982 using the 400^th anniversary celebration as a catalyst for the revitalization of the town. The plan was updated in 2003 and is used as both a planning tool and visionary blueprint. The latest update will explore the accomplishments of the two previous plans and the town’s changing needs for the future.

The Planning Board will seek residents and business owners to sit on the steering committee – a working group to help identify those needs. The board decided that although the group would not be exclusively made up of residents, since many of the business owners live outside the town, the majority of the group should be residents.

The committee will be comprised of 13 members. Two representatives from each defined segment of the community – with the Planning Board chairman or his designate acting as an ex officio member – will form the 13 member working group. The defined segments include residents who live east of Highway 64, residents living west of Highway 64, Pirate’s Cove residents, business interests from the historic district and highway area and two at-large appointments.

The Planning Board hopes to have a list of candidates for the 20 year plan Steering Committee ready to consider by their May meeting. The board will send their choices to the Board of Commissioners, who will have the final say on forming the working group.
