The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes got the 2019 varsity baseball season off to a great start with two wins this past weekend. The Hurricanes defeated Triangle Math and Science Academy 14-4 on Friday and 16-5 on Saturday. The games were team victories that saw improvement by all of the Hurricanes players, reports CHSS baseball coach Keith Durham.

Friday afternoon, Johnny Conner Jr., Cape Hatteras High School Class of 1967, threw out the first pitch of the 2019 season to get things started. The Hurricanes went on to win a chilly five-inning affair 14-4 ending the game in the light rain.

Saturday morning, both teams gathered to eat breakfast at the Cape Hatteras Secondary cafeteria for some good food and fellowship. The teams took to the field again at noon. The ’Canes won the Saturday game 16-5 in five innings to cap a great weekend of baseball.

On Friday, the Fourth Annual Sandlot Tournament takes place at the Cape Hatteras baseball and softball fields.

At 4 p.m. on Friday, March 8, Manteo and Currituck teams play baseball. At 6 p.m., the Hatteras baseball and softball teams play Bear Grass.

On Saturday, the consolation baseball game starts at noon along with a rematch between Hatteras and Bear Grass on the softball field. At 3 p.m., the tournament championship game starts.

A special event, Knock Cancer out of the Park, takes place at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon.

Two more special events are set to take place. A drive for canned and non-perishable food for the food pantry is part of the tournament. A silent auction will raise funds for the baseball program.

Tickets are $5 per day.
