A water bird, the anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), like this one seen on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, is an adequate swimmer.

It also walks in shallow water through submerged vegetation using its knife-sharp bill to spear fish, crustaceans and the occasional invertebrate found among the plants.

Like another water bird, the cormorant, the anhinga often spends the time it is not in the water standing in the sun stretching out its wings to dry itself.
