On Nov. 1, 2024, around 8 a.m., a wreck on U.S. 64 claimed the lives of an elderly couple.

A 2018 Ford Focus crossed the centerline and hit a 2018 GMC pickup truck.

The driver of the Focus, Frances James Cioffair, 82, and passenger Leigh Cioffari, 80, were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. The pickup truck driver was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital, reported Sgt. Gary Ipock with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The wreck occurred between the Alligator River Bridge and SR 1229, or old U.S. 64 in Tyrrell County.
