The North Carolina Education Lottery has reported on a million-dollar win from a scratch-off ticket by Pitt County man.

David Boyd Jr., of Greenville, bought a $10 scratch-off in October because of fond memories he has playing the Loteria game – and his decision paid off with a $1 million top prize win.

“I have nostalgia for playing Loteria because the biggest win I had before this was $500 on a Loteria ticket,” Boyd said.

Boyd said the win means his family can afford to buy a house now. “This is life-changing money for us,” Boyd said. “We can put a down payment on a house.”

He bought his lucky $1,000,000 Loteria ticket from Handy Mart on Charles Boulevard in Greenville.

“Today was the first time I bought a ticket in a long time,” he recalled on the day of his big win. “I just had a couple bucks in my pocket so I decided to play.”

When Boyd arrived at lottery headquarters that same day to collect his winnings, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,003.

In addition to a down payment on a house, Boyd plans to pay some bills and set money aside for his kid’s college fund.

The $1,000,000 Loteria game debuted in March with four top prizes of $1 million. Two $1 million prizes remain to be claimed, noted a news release from NCEL.
