On Oct. 7, 2024, Hosea Wilson, county assessor, presented the proposed schedules, standards and rules to the Board of Commissioners as required by North Carolina General Statutes. The board voted for the Nov. 4 public hearing.

At the same meeting, Becky Huff, tax collector, presented her settlement report for 2023 taxes, both paid and unpaid.

For the tax year 2023, the total county real estate and personal property levy was $67,593,483.77. That total includes all real estate, mobile home, boats, rental personal property and business personal property. It also includes properties in bankruptcy, properties with unknown owners, and properties in conflict regarding ownership, states the settlement.

Taxes collected on the county’s tax levy at June 30, 2024 was $67,361,530.90 for a collection rate of 99.66%.

Dare County also collects taxes for five municipalities. Collection rates for those towns are: Kill Devil Hills 99.67%; Southern Shores 99.63%; Duck 99.94%; Kitty Hawk 99.57%; Manteo 99.56%.

The commissioners charged the tax collector to begin tax collections for the 2024 levy.
