Local athletes, artists win at Senior Games State Finals

On September 16-22 at the 2024 North Carolina Senior Games State Finals, held in Raleigh and Cary, local winners include:

Rita Ayers, from Manteo, won a Gold Medal in the 1 mile, 5k and 10k cycling races;

Dana Coyne, from Kitty Hawk, won a gold medal in the standing long jump;

Richard Denton, from Manteo, won a Silver Medal in the men’s billiards competition;

Louis Dwyer, from Southern Shores, won a Gold Medal in the 5k race, a Silver Medal in the 1500 meter run, and a Bronze metal in the 400 meter dash;

Danielle Foster, from Kitty Hawk, won a Gold Medal in the 1 mile and 5k cycling races;

Tom Munckton, from Nags Head, won a Silver Medal in the men’s billiard competition;

Terree Neal, from Nags Head, won a Bronze medal in the ladies billiards competition;

Malissa Perry, from Southern Shores, won a Bronze Medal in the 10K cycling race;

Arlene Tibbetts, from Kill Devil Hills, won a Gold Medal in the softball throw competition;

Joey Tynch, from Kitty Hawk, won a Gold Medal in the 1 mile and 5k cycling races, and a Silver Medal in the 10K cycling race; and

Patsy Tynch, from Kitty Hawk, won a Gold Medal in the 1 mile, the 5K and the 10K cycling races.

At the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals held at the Cary Arts Center on September 19-20, Marion Spriggs, from Kill Devil Hills, won a Gold Medal in the SilverArts pastel competition and Dana Coyne and John Kuhn, from Kitty Hawk, won a Silver Medal in the SilverArts vocal small group competition.

In the Cheerleading Showcase at the 2024 North Carolina Senior Games State Finals, held at the Cary Arts Center on September 19, the Fabulous Fathoms with Barbara Elmore, Karen Serfling, Elizabeth Smith and Beverly Zervakis, from Hatteras Island, won a Bronze medal.

The men’s and women’s Outer Banks Senior Games swim team won Gold and Silver medals, respectively at the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals Swim Meet on September 21. The teammates include David Henzler, Danielle Foster, Richard “Rick” Jones, Gracia DiPace, Kenneth Morgan, Laura Cortez, John Donlan, Harry Schiffman, Robert Trivette, Kathleen Morgan, Johanna Milchuck, Rita Ayers, Dave Tonneson, Lisa Minerich, Karen Anderson, Lloyd Minerich, Michael Bryant and Brooke Kirk, Charles Erwin, Greg Florence, Brian Tress, John Wallace, George Whitwell and Daryl Law.

All the athletes, artists and teams/groups mentioned above qualified at the annual 2024 Outer Banks Senior Games this past spring. The Outer Banks Senior Games are part of a statewide network of 54 local programs sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games, Inc. NCSG is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 50 years of age and better, noted a news release.

NCSG is a statewide nonprofit organization sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. The gold sponsor of state finals for 2024 is the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP); silver sponsors are Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Resort and UNC Healthcare; bronze sponsor is North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance. NCSG also offers SilverArts, the statewide heritage, visual, literary and performing arts program; SilverLiners senior line dancing program and SilverStriders national award-winning walking program.
