At the Labor Day Cape Hatteras Lighthouse 5K Race, 125 runners and walkers ran and walked a course starting close to the old Lighthouse location out to Loran Road and back again.

The lighthouse surrounded by scaffolding was uniquely situated to be pictured at the start and the finish of the race and walk.

The race started early in the morning, after a brief sprinkle. The sun rose behind dunes to paint the sky filled with clouds.

Nearly 35 volunteers showed up, some at 5:30 in the morning to set up tents and route signs. Others showed up around 6:30 a.m. to set up a water table for runners. Volunteers directed traffic, prepared food, set up after-race water, cold towels and amazing participation medals, showing the lighthouse with scaffolding.

This inaugural event was organized by Barrier Island Group led Tom Amatucci, Jenny Ash and Laurie Amatucci, in cooperation with the National Park Service. Sponsoring this race and walk were Surf or Sound Realty, Cottages at the Cape, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative, Outer Banks Health, Ocean Atlantic Rentals and Salvo Produce.

OBX Running Company set up the timing and reported these results:

Overall Female: 1. Sita Ewell Manassas, Va., 22.18 minutes; 2. Riley Ewell, Manassas, Va., 24:47 minutes; and Marie Carney, Richmond, Va., 26:25 minutes.

Overall Male: 1. Max Syrrist, Buxton, NC, 21:50 minutes; 1. Pablo Marquez, Frisco 21.57 minutes; and 3. Stephen King, Buxton, 23:01.

16 years and under: Female: Taylor Ewell, 13, Manassas, Va., 28:31 minutes. Male: Bryce Cumming, 14, Mechanicsville, Va., 24:56 minutes.

50 years and over: Female: Xris, 63, Frisco, NC, 28:00 minutes. Male: Thomas Flynn, 61, Sterling Va., 28:28 minutes.

Runners and walkers came from North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, South Carolina and Maryland, and perhaps additional states.

The results clearly show a family of runners. The Ewell family from Manassas, Va., placed three women in the winners photo.

The next Barrier Island Group landmark race and walk is the Holiday Hustle at Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island, scheduled for Dec. 7, 2024. Previously, Barrier Island Group organized the Four for the Fourth run on July 3, also on Hatteras Island at Kinnakeet Shores.
