On Aug. 21, 2024, the Manteo Board of Commissioners met for a brief mid-month meeting, taking up a request from Community-Police Advisory Board and consideration of an addition to 301 Budleigh Street.
First though, the commissioners saluted R. Cody Hooker for five years of service in the town’s Department of Public Works. Presenting the award were Town Manager Melissa Dickerson and Frankie Woodley, Director of Public Works.
Reporting on behalf of the Community-Police Advisory Board, board member Bob Kenney raised the problem of bicycles on the town’s boardwalk. He asked for ordinance to prohibit bicycles on the “very narrow” boardwalk.
Commissioner Tod Clissold commented that the commissioners were “pretty much all in agreement” on the issue. The commissioners will take up the request at the Sept. 4, 2024 meeting.
Malcom Fearing and Susan Fearing are restoring 301 Budleigh Street. Malcolm reported that the commissioner Ruth Stetson’s great-grandfather built the four-bedroom house in 1940-1941. Lee Tugwell’s father trimmed the house.
Fearing requested a change of use from residential to commercial to accommodate a plan for a restaurant/market. The change of use was previously approved by the town’s Planning and Zoning Board. The commissioners followed with approval. A site plan to accommodate a new handicapped accessible bathroom and exterior ramp was also approved by the Board of Commissioners conditioned on receipt of all the necessary permits.
No member of the public came forward to offer public comment.
The next Manteo Board of Commissioners meeting is set for Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024 at 6 p.m. at the Manteo Town Hall meeting room.
