Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

Exodus 24:9-10, “Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.”

Can you imagine seeing God with your physical eyes? Actually being in his presence? Think about that today, at some point. And take more than just a couple of minutes to do it. Maybe while you are driving today, turn off the radio and think about what it might be like to be in the presence of God. Honestly, we cannot imagine it, Paul tells us in I Corinthians 2:9 that no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. So, take the best you can imagine and multiply that by a million, and you might be getting close.

It’s interesting that there is no description given of what God looked like here. Maybe there is a reason for that; Moses when he was writing didn’t want to give an idea of what God looked like so no one would be tempted to make an image of him, just a guess. Maybe God told them not to try and describe his appearance. The more likely answer is, God was just too awesome to put into human language. We often try to describe things and say words fail us or take a picture and say it doesn’t compare. That would be how it is to describe God. The best they can do is to describe the floor.

But let’s remember this morning that God promises to be with his people always. That was among the very last things Jesus told his disciples before he ascended into heaven. And as Christians we have God himself, in the person of the Holy Spirit, living inside of us, we receive that gift at our baptism. But I wonder if we don’t become jaded and take God’s presence for granted. We far too often live as if God doesn’t know or see what we’re doing. And we act like he is never around. As Christians, we need to realize we always have the privilege of living in the presence of God!

Father, thank you for your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
