Parents charged in March death of three-week-old baby

The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office has reported on the arrest of a man and woman in connection with the March death of an infant.
According to a CCSO media release issued Friday evening, August 20, 2024, at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Bluefish Ct. in Grandy concerning an unresponsive 3-week-old child, Declan Merritt.
“The child was transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, NC, where he later passed away. Consequent to a continued investigation by the CID/NARC divisions, Brittany Nixon and Cameron Merritt were arrested and charged with the death of Declan Merritt on Thursday, August 29th, 2024,” stated the release.
According to CCSO, Nixon and Merritt are the parents of the deceased infant.
Brittany Nixon, 35, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse. She was confined at the Currituck County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
Cameron Merritt, 28, was charged with felony child abuse. He was confined at the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office under at $250,000 secured bond.
Court records list a Nags Head address as the place of residence for both Nixon and Merritt.
