Baum Center advisory board created; appointments made

On July 16, 2024, the Dare County Board of Commissioners created the Thomas A. Baum Center Advisory Board to give guidance and support to the center’s services and staff.
The Baum Center staff and the Dare County Older Adult Services Advisory Board submitted a request to create an advisory board for the Thomas A. Baum Center. This action fulfills requirements for the Baum Center’s application to the North Carolina’s Association on Aging Senior Center of Excellence Certification.
The Older Adult Services Advisory Board will be involved in selection of the initial board and development of bylaws. All proposed members will be submitted for the Board of Commissioners for approval. The bylaws will also be brought to the commissioners for approval.
On the same date, the county’s commissioners took the following actions regarding six boards, councils or commissions.
– East Lake Community Center Board: reappointed Rosemarie Doshier. Three additional vacancies are on the board, but no applications are on file.
– Game and Wildlife Commission issues and renews duck blind licenses in all Dare County waters. Reappointed to three-year terms are Phil Haywood, Harvey Scarborough Jr. and Buddy Shelton. Dr. Andrew Horne did not wish to be reappointed. The commission had no recommendation for a replacement at this time.
– Library Board-Dare establishes local policies within those set by the Regional Library Board and oversees the Library Trust Fund budget, and also serves on the Board of the Dare County Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Appointed are Adrienne Palma and Kevin Wright to fill the unexpired terms of Jo Ann Wilson-Harfst and Susan Pfaff, who both resigned from the board.
– Older Adult Services Advisory Council: On the council’s recommendation, Margaret Dennis was appointed chair and Isaac Simonsen as vice chair as Mary Pendill stepped down as chair. Barbara Franchi’s term expired and the council did not recommend reappointment and did not recommend anyone to fill this vacancy at this time.
– Parks and Recreation Advisory Council reviews and advises the Parks and Recreation Department in its efforts to promote, organize, plan and coordinate activities and programs for youth and adults in Dare County. Reappointed to the council are Anita Bills, Eddie Twyne, Amanda Hooper and Helen Furr. Appointed to the council are Kenny Brite, Heath Fountain, Jamie Wentz, Katy Jo Walker and Ivy Ingram to replace the following who did not wish to be reappointed: Willer Spencer, Thomas Floyd, Megan Vayette and Robert Parrish. George Barr’s term expired and the council did not recommend his reappointment.
– Wanchese Community Center Board manages and is responsible for the upkeep of the community building. Reappointed to two-year terms are Justin Bateman and Robert L. Walton.
