Weekend before last, five First Flight High School athletes competed at the high-powered Carolina Distance Carnival in Matthews, NC.
In spite of the travel distance across the state, the athletes won three of their five heats in the mile run.
Karter Tucker was the first to make a showing with a come-from-behind win and personal best of 4:48.5.
Next it was Lucy Stecher who won her heat in a personal best and fourth-fastest ever First Flight time of 5:21.32.
Coming from way back in the pack of his heat, Liam Minnich pulled ahead to win his heat in 4:35.02.
Making a solid run in her mile race, Moira Furr finished with an impressive 5:28.54 while freshman Kayla Folkes, after running 2:20.65 for 800 meters just a few hours earlier, smashed Jessica Wallace’s 12 year-old 1600 meter school record with a 5:08.64 en route to beating Tatum Dermatas’s school record in the mile buy clocking 5:10.48 for that distance.
These are great signs of our form as we head into championship season.
