Spring is the right time to be at Island Farm. Join in for the farm’s annual Homeschool Day, where families and students will have the opportunity to learn history together through a variety of hands-on activities that draw off of mid-19th century life on the Outer Banks.

Homeschool Day will take place on Wednesday, April 17 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Island Farm. Students will receive a $2 discount on the farm’s entrance fee for the day. Admission to the site for all other visitors is $10, and those aged 0-3 years old may enter for free.

This year’s theme – “Many Hands Make Light Work” – will focus on everyday work required on a circa 1847 farm on Roanoke Island. Special activities will include candlemaking, hearth cooking, wagon rides, gardening, live blacksmithing (including the opportunity to make take-home mini swords) and more. Visitors will also learn and participate in the entire process of harvesting, drying, preparing and making yaupon tea, a popular drink on antebellum Roanoke Island made from America’s only native and naturally caffeinated plant. Samples will be available for visitors during the event.
