Currituck County was represented well by the Currituck 4-H Horse Bowl team which recently traveled to Raleigh, NC to compete in the State 4-H Horse Bowl competition at NC State University. The 4-H Horse Bowl Contest is designed to offer an opportunity for youth interested in horses to display their knowledge gained in a competitive and friendly atmosphere. Additionally, it is designed to encourage youth and leaders to study and obtain a more thorough and complete knowledge of horses and related subject matter.

The Currituck County Horse Bowl team, consisting of Cayden Lowe, Poppy Wright, Sophie Haislop, Amanda Jennings and Karleigh Meads, placed second at the District Horse Bowl (Mixed Team) competition that took place in February in Martin County. Individual high point awards were received by Karleigh Meads, placing fifth, Poppy Wright, placing ninth, and Cayden Lowe, placing tenth. Their outstanding finish in this competition qualified the team to advance to the State Competition held in March 9 on the campus of NCSU in Raleigh.

The competition consisted of 10 teams in a five-round, double-elimination tournament, and Currituck finished third. Additionally, Currituck County had two team members in the top ten for individual high points; Cayden Lowe was third place and Karleigh Meads placed eighth. Cayden Lowe has also been invited to try out for the NC 4-H Horse Bowl team. Currituck County was coached by 4-H volunteer Heather Campbell, assisted by Hannah Meads and Jaime Haislop.

4-H is North Carolina’s largest youth development organization, equipping more than 263,000 young people each year with the skills to succeed and improve the world around them. 4-H programs and camps encourage young people to “learn by doing,” helping them to develop into active, contributing citizens. NC State Extension and the Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A & T State University coordinate 4-H programs statewide.
