First Flight High School has announced the hiring of head football coach Jimmy Wills, who was approved by the Dare County Board of Education during its February 12, 2024 meeting.
“Coach Wills brings a wealth of experience to FFHS’ football program with an extensive coaching career, spanning over 18 years in Virginia,” noted the Dare County Schools announcement of his appointment.
Wills earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a minor in coaching education from James Madison University (JMU), along with a master’s of arts in teaching. He began his coaching career at William Monroe High School in Standardsville, Va. and served in various capacities during his five seasons with the Dragons.
Transitioning to James Madison University, Wills spent one season as an intern with the highly successful Dukes program, then returned to William Monroe High School sidelines as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
In 2016, Wills assumed the role of offensive coordinator at the Blue Ridge School, where he played a pivotal role in leading the Barons to the VISAA Division 2 State Championship in his first season. The following year, he guided the team to a return trip to the state semi-finals in 2017.
Following these successful seasons, Wills was promoted to the head football coach position at the Blue Ridge School. Over four seasons, he steered the team to another appearance in the 2019 VISAA Division 2 title game, earning recognition as the Central Virginia Private School Coach of the Year in 2021.
Wills and his wife Candi, who works for the University of Virginia, have two sons, Ryan and Tyler. Ryan is a student at JMU, while Tyler, a former college football player at Emory & Henry College, is currently coaching college football at Averett University.
Coach Wills will officially begin working at First Flight High on March 1.
