Throughout the year, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge hosts a weekly free bird walk. Each Friday from 8-9:30 a.m., a birding expert will walk part of the North Pond birding trail from the visitor center parking lot with whomever shows up interested in birding.
During a recent Pea Island Refuge bird walk, leader/photographer Karen Lebing saw more than 150 American avocets (Recurvirostra americana). Some of that large group are shown in these photos.
According to the Cornell All About Birds website, “American Avocet chicks leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching. Day old avocets can walk, swim and even dive to escape predators.”
