This great egret (Ardea alba) has the catch of the day: a mullet.
Fish are the great egret’s main meal, but they will eat frogs, snakes, amphibians, grasshoppers, aquatic insects and small rodents and mammals.
The tall wading birds have long black legs and a knife-like yellow bill and can reach over 4 feet in height with a wingspan of over 4.5 feet.
They can be seen at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and this region year ’round.
