Currituck County Schools has announced that Sandra Reynolds, chief information officer, has been named the 2024 North Carolina Northeast Region Technology Director of the Year. The winning directors were selected by their peers in their region for making a significant impact on transforming student learning through the integration of technology.

“Since joining Currituck County Schools in 1997, Mrs. Reynolds has made a significant, positive impact on the district,” stated the announcement from CCS. “She first served as an AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) Consulting teacher and English Language Arts teacher in the classroom before transitioning to her current position in 2018. Mrs. Reynolds is a dedicated professional and exceptionally versatile, wearing many hats to support the district.”

Under her leadership, Currituck County Schools successfully transitioned to remote learning at the start of the pandemic in 2020, becoming a fully 1:1 district in the most challenging of times. Reynolds and her Technology Department team continue to provide support, managing and maintaining all aspects of technology across the district at all 10 schools and administrative offices.

More recently, she played an instrumental role in the planning and developing of the district and curricular strategic plans and continues to be instrumental in implementing both. “Mrs. Reynolds also oversees district and state testing, and she takes on various tasks and projects as needed, all while helping to provide an innovative and growing digital learning program for students,” stated the announcement.

Surrounded by family and friends, Reynolds was honored at the January 18 Currituck County Board of Education meeting. During the recognition, Superintendent Dr. Matt Lutz shared that Reynolds has “… always been a leader in technology – a leader in education.” Colleagues additionally describe her as an “unsung behind-the-scenes hero for helping ensure students and staff can all get their best work done daily” and having an “unwavering commitment to excellence.” Assistant Superintendent Renee Dowdy said she is thankful for Reynolds’ “dependability and willingness to help out.”

In March, all eight regional technology director honorees will be recognized at the North Carolina Technology in Education Society Conference, and the state’s Technology Director of the Year will be announced.

“Currituck County Schools is honored to have Mrs. Reynolds represent the Northeast region moving forward. She is a passionate educator and deserving of this distinction,” stated the announcement.
