Ocracoke, Cape Hatteras square off on the Buxton basketball court

In rivalry basketball games in Buxton on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Ocracoke varsity boys bested Cape Hatteras Secondary 55-41.
In the junior varsity boys matchup, Cape Hatteras won 40-37 in the last minutes of that game.
In the varsity girls matchup, six Cape Hatteras players scored 33 points in the first half and played spread offense and zone defense in the second half. The Ocracoke five played valiantly.
Cape Hatteras notched a 54-10 win. Cape Hatteras senior Abby O’Neal scored a game-high 15 points, followed by Kylie Phillips with 13.
Ocracoke’s boys varsity team, which leads the 1A Atlantic Five Conference with a 3-0 record, streaked out in the first quarter, racking up 13 points to 1 point for Cape Hatteras. At halftime, the score was 27 to 13. The Dolphins widened the lead scoring 12 points to 10 for Cape Hatteras in the third quarter and finished the game with 55 points.
Leading the scoring for Ocracoke was the team’s big man Rahnier Lyons. He scored in every quarter to put in 33 points under the basket. Four other players scored the remaining 22 points. Ocracoke was called for 16 fouls, including two technical fouls.
For Cape Hatteras, the leading scorer was Sam Jenkins with 17 points. Jenkins was ejected with 6:25 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Cape Hatteras racked up 20 fouls, including three technical fouls.
In the boys junior varsity game, with a little over two minutes left in the game, Ocracoke came within three points of tying the score. For Cape Hatteras, Ashby Wilson scored two free throws to push the Hurricanes lead to 5 points, 36-31. For Ocracoke Walker Salee scored a field goal. Wilson scored a field goal and two free throws for the final Cape Hatteras score of 40. Ocracoke’s Noah Turner added two field goals for the 37 final score for the Dolphins. Technical fouls were called in this game also.
Cape Hatteras plays two games away. The next home games are Feb. 2 against Bear Grass and Feb. 6 against Columbia.
For Ocracoke, the next two home games are Jan. 30 against Mattamuskeet and Feb. 2 against Columbia.
