A pill-addicted mother, her three daughters, and their dysfunctional extended family struggle to find various ways to cope with the aftermath of the disappearance of their alcoholic patriarch.

This is the main premise of Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County.” The play unflinchingly depicts the dark underbelly of a modern Midwestern family while still maintaining humor and wit. It takes place in the stiflingly claustrophobic Weston house, where the cast of 13 play out years of generational trauma and abuse through powerful dialogue and staging. “Family dynamics are some of the most complicated and interesting relationships to study and this play does it so well,” says director Evan Tillett.

The original production, which won both the Tony for best play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, was adapted into a film in 2013 and featured Meryl Streep as the matriarch of the Weston clan.

The play shows how addiction affects not only the addict, but those closest to them as well, and the lasting impacts it can have on these relationships. On Thursday, February 8, Theatre of Dare will be donating the evening’s ticket sales to fellow local nonprofit, the OBX Walk Against Addiction. Walk Against Addiction’s mission is to “Raise awareness, fight addiction, and come together as a community to help all who suffer from addiction.”

“Theatre of Dare has always benefited from the love of the community and are proud to give some of that back to a worthy cause,” noted a TOD news release.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see how this fabulous cast brings each of these different and flawed characters to life. It truly has been a great experience working with this cast and crew and I hope everyone enjoys the wild ride that is ‘August: Osage County’” Tillett continued.

“August: Osage County” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 and 11 at the Theatre of Dare in Kitty Hawk.
