April 25, 1931 – January 6, 2024
VIRGINIA HOLLOMAN MEEKINS, 92, of Manteo, departed this earthly life Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Peak Resources of the Outer Banks. Virginia was born April 25, 1931, to the late Robert A. “Red” Holloman III and Anna G. Holloman. Virginia grew up on the family farm, Indian Springs Dairy, in Hertford County but visited Dare County for 4-H and when her parents came to fish.
Virginia met Francis Meekins while attending a performance of The Lost Colony and married him a few years later. To this union were born Susan, Warren and Holly.
Virginia was a great mom in all she did to encourage and guide us. She was a Den Mother for Manteo Troop 501 and was a terrific sport about soap box derby and homecoming parade float construction projects among other fond memories. She understood the importance of having a dog during our childhood years to teach us responsibility and other important life lessons. In retirement, Virginia went to the local animal shelter and adopted “Cal” who provided great canine companionship in the household in the years of Francis’ illness and beyond.
Virginia was a talented artist who attended Women’s College (now UNC-Greensboro) following her graduation from Ahoskie High School. After college, she joined Francis at the Times Printing Company, in a career that spanned multiple company endeavors.
Virginia embraced the Dare County community, working with The Lost Colony Fish Fry for many years, and participating in the Pirates’ Jamboree (she served as Queen one year). She was a longtime supporter of The Lost Colony, The Elizabethan Gardens, Elizabeth R & Co., the Roanoke Island Fire Department, the Outer Banks History Center, the Lions Club and many other local organizations. She was a longtime member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Francis W. Meekins; her daughter, Susan Meekins Simpson; two grandsons, Bradley Meekins and Tristan Meekins, her brother Robert A. Holloman, III (B/Gen., Ret., US Army), and her brother-in-law Roger P. Meekins (Lt. Col., Ret., USAF).
Virginia is survived by her son, F. Warren Meekins, Jr. (Beverly), daughter, Holly Meekins Williams (Harry), six grandchildren – John (Allison), Theresa (Brian), Jennifer, Lucy (Dan), Kimberly and Everett; six great-grandchildren – Isaiah, Briana, Cora, Caroline, Della and Luke. She also survived by sister-in-law Mary Meekins Harwell (Boyce); sister-in-law Celia R. Meekins; sister-in-law Jane Moore Holloman and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to remember the many caregivers who provided compassionate care to Virginia during the course of her dementia journey and thank them for the quality of life they gave to Mom.
A celebration of life will be held at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo on Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m. Please come as you are to share memories and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Adoration Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
