Fourth- and fifth-grade mathletes from across Dare County Schools competed in the 24 Game Math Competition on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023 at First Flight Elementary School.

The district-wide tournament brought together 60 talented math students from Dare County’s five elementary schools. Students began learning and playing the math card game 24 Game in their classrooms at the beginning of the school year to strengthen their computational fluency, number sense and critical thinking. Given 15 seconds, students combine the four numbers shown on the game card to create 24 using the order of operations.

School representative teams were selected from overall classroom winners. After two rounds of play, the top 16 players were chosen as semifinalists for the third round. The top scorers then advanced to the final round.

“First Flight Elementary School’s Media Center was filled with ‘mathletes’ wearing their individual school-colored team shirts. Seeing so many excited and cheering students, representing each of our elementary schools, with our middle school students serving as moderators for a math competition was tremendous,” stated Steve Basnight, Dare County Schools superintendent.

This year’s four finalists included outstanding fifth-grade students from Manteo Elementary (MES) and Cape Hatteras Elementary (CHES). Presley Midgett and Marin McEwan represented CHES, and Annabelle Midgett and Solange Perez Rodriguez represented MES.

Presley Midgett, who reached the finals last school year as a fourth-grader, won the final round and is Dare County Schools’ 24 Game champion.
