Manteo – Eugene Robinson Austin, affectionately known as “Buddy” age 76, passed away in Nags Head November 29, 2023. He served his country proudly and bravely as a veteran of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Eugene “Buddy” ministered through music: from eastern North Carolina to Virginia. His musical gifts and organizational skills led Buddy to envision and create the Manteo Male Chorus, the Manteo Community Choir, the Columbia Community Choir, and several other musical collaborations. Buddy’s performances were highly regarded by other famous musicians near and far. Buddy is a humble gift to the body of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Lillian Meekins Austin; his long-time friend Carole Scott; his niece Tanaya Farrow, and his nephew Jamie Farrow.

Eugene R. Austin leaves to cherish his memory three sisters, Bessie Farrow, Charleen Mathews (Larry), Sally Simmons (Eddie); one aunt, Pensecola McClease; four nieces Rhonda Carver, Carla Beale (Dwayne), Davina Austin, and Latora Cason (H.Patrick); two nephews, Travis Mathews and Eddie Simmons Jr.; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Eugene’s passing is also grieved by his loyal friends and long-time employers, Betsy Seawell and partner, Kerry Landherr and the Islander Motel family.

Family and friends may view from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Manteo Assembly Church Friday, December 8, 2023. The funeral will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Manteo Assembly Church. Reverend T.J. Etheridge will officiate. Immediately following the funeral, the burial with military honors will be held at historic Haven Creek Cemetery in Manteo.
