On Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, Dare County Schools Superintendent Steve Basnight announced in a letter to parents and guardians at First Flight High School that school Principal Chuck Lansing had resigned effective immediately.
Additionally, Basnight wrote Assistant Principal Lela Ingram is “currently on suspension with pay pending an investigation.”
In the interim, Director of Secondary Instruction Denise Fallon is tapped as acting principal. “We are confident,” Basnight writes, “Mrs. Fallon is well-equipped to lead the school through this transition period.”
Basnight writes to parents and guardians, “we want to assure you that First Flight High School’s staff remain committed to providing a high-quality education and nurturing learning environment for your child.”
For the 2021-22 school term, Lansing was named the Principal of the Year for the school district. At that time, he was in his third year as an administrator at First Flight High School, having also served as assistant principal.
The school also has a second assistant principal, Joe Tyson, who served as an assistant principal at River Road Middle School in Elizabeth City before joining the First Flight staff. He has almost two decades of experience in education.
The Basnight email, sent to parents and guardians around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, states: “Due to employee confidentiality, we are unable to provide any additional details at this time.”
