April 22, 1967 – October 30, 2023

Manteo, NC – Stanley Chris Payne Jr., 56, a Dare County native, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Monday morning, October 30, 2023.

Chris played football and ran track for Manteo High School before graduating in 1985. He worked for the Dare County and Currituck County Water Departments, retiring after 20 years of service.

Chris greatly loved and cherished his family and friends. He always had a smile on his face and knew no strangers. Chris loved everything about being near or on the water. He loved surf fishing and founded the team Lost and Found.

The family would like to thank his caregivers for giving him so much love and wonderful care. Also, to all who have shared their love, support, and prayers for them.

Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Lela Quidley Jones, and Clyde and Mabel Payne; great-grandparents, Rowan and Grace Quidley and Samuel and Katie Jones; uncle, Joe Jones Jr.; and aunt, Gayla Robin Insley.

He is survived by his parents, Noelle Payne and John Booth Jr. of Manteo and Stanley Chris Payne Sr. and Chip Payne of Kitty Hawk, NC; brother, Barry John Payne and family of Omaha, NE; daughters, Emily and Samantha Payne of Jarvisburg, NC; and three grandchildren.

A small ceremony of family and friends was held on the waterfront at his home in Manteo on Saturday, November 4, 2023, with his cousin Rev. Lee Wise officiating.
