Fatality reported in Stumpy Point fire

At 12:10 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2023, firefighters from Stumpy Point responded to a call in the 200 block of Bayview Drive.

A neighbor had smelled smoke, looked out a window, and called 9-1-1.

A fatality is reported, but, as of Friday morning, Dare County officials had not released a name.

In addition to firefighters with the Stumpy Point Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters responded from Manns Harbor, Roanoke Island and Nags Head fire departments.

Three Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Dare County Emergency Medical Services staffers were at scene. North Carolina Forestry Service was also at the scene.

Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs and investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal are investigating the fire in the home built in 1900.
