Southern Shores council members heard a presentation from OBX Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition vice chairman Jim Gould seeking volunteers to help promote bicycle and pedestrian safety from Corolla to Hatteras.

According to Gould, there were 60 collisions involving a bicycle in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills alone from 2018 to 2022, and another 38 involving a pedestrian.

The organization provides free helmets and bicycle lights to students and seasonal workers and offers education and public service announcements on local media.

“[Is bicycle and pedestrian safety] the responsibility of the pedestrian? Is it the responsibility of the driver? Is it the responsibility of the bicyclist?” Gould asked?  “It’s a shared responsibility.”

The Watermelon Festival on Thursday, August 3 at the Kitty Hawk Kites location at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing is one of the primary fundraisers for OBX Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition. More information can be found at obxbikeped.org.

Next, town manager Cliff Ogburn said the street paving project is set to begin shortly and is contracted to wrap up mid-October. Streets to paved or repaired include: Chicahauk Trail, Circle Drive, 1^st Avenue, Sea Oats Trail, 9^th Avenue (West), Ginguite Trail and Hickory Trail (crosswalk and stop bar only).

In her report, Mayor Elizabeth Morey recognized Jam Media Solutions, the conglomerate that owns four local radio stations, for their messaging to travelers going north to Duck and Corolla to remain on NC 12 rather than using Southern Shores neighborhood streets.

“I just want to publicly recognize this radio station. They’re doing it not because we asked them to but because they’ve heard and seen the messaging and they are trying to do their best for our community at large. I just want to say thank you. We appreciate you,” she said.
