Second-inning spurt leads Outer Banks Scallywags past Greenbrier Knights

The Outer Banks Scallywags scored eight runs in the second inning, which helped them defeat the Greenbrier Knights 15-2 on Thursday, July 20. Riley Finkelston was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Christian Yoo singled, scoring one run, Hayden Friese drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Jack Ryan doubled, scoring two runs, Jackson Thompson grounded out, scoring one run, and Josh Foulks singled, scoring one run.

The Scallywags got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Ryan grounded out, and Max Puckett homered to right field, each scoring one run. They then scored five runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Puckett doubled, scoring one run, an error scored two runs, and Alex Ulloa homered to left field, scoring two runs.

Yoo earned the win for the Scallywags. The righty allowed two hits and two runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking four. David Baggot took the loss for the Knights. The starting pitcher went one inning, giving up seven runs on two hits, striking out none and walking three. Zachary Odom threw three innings of no-run ball for the Scallywags in relief. The reliever surrendered two hits, striking out four and walking five.

The Scallywags tallied 11 hits in the game. Ryan, Puckett, Finkelston and Yoo each collected two hits for his team. Ryan provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Scallywags with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Friese paced his team with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game.

Jake Tone, Colt Cundiff, Kenny Schaedel and Scott McDonough each collected one hit for the Greenbrier Knights. Josh Holland led his team with two runs batted in. The Knights had a strong eye at the plate, tallying nine walks for the game. Corbin McCloud and Tone led the team with two walks each.
