Elizabeth Gallop Cox, age 87, a native of Dare County, NC, died on Sunday morning July 9, 2023, having spent her last hours in the company of her family.

A graduate of Baylor University and Our Lady of the Lake University, she completed work in the sciences and education and held herself out to have “taught everyone in Dare County.” Lessons ranged across the spectrum – from how to complete your chemistry homework, to how to make the best crabcakes, or how to correctly pull weeds. Her commitment to the community was tireless during her working years. An enduring love of poetry left her able to recite beautiful renditions, even during her last days and weeks. She was known for breaking into song in a gorgeous contralto voice, notably, whenever, and however she pleased. Many of us lived by her edict to “keep it level,” literally speaking, and when it was a command that applied to our broader life. Her enduring faith in God and her hope of heaven are blessings both her family and her church community realized from her work and her walk.

Elizabeth was married to Bobby Ray Cox, in April of 1957, in Baylor Chapel. Widowed in 2005, she continued with a life that aimed at making home a place where everyone was welcome. The fourteenth, and youngest child, of Hiram Clyde Gallop and Mollie Shannon Gallop, she is survived only by her sister, Lucile Sykes of Virginia Beach. She and Bob raised three children.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Cox Kessler (Benjamin Kessler), Anna Cox Creef (Greg Creef) and Matthew Ray Cox (Kenn Walker). Elizabeth was an example of persistence and perseverance to her much-loved seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Elizabeth’s Life is planned for Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Mount Carmel Methodist Church in Manns Harbor, North Carolina, at 11 o’clock. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, obrf.org, which she helped to organize in its early years, would best honor her memory.
