Several local, coastal counties have proclaimed June 11-17 as Local Foods Week. The Coastal Food Policy Council created by Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck, Chowan and Dare counties is working to connect citizens to healthy, affordable food options and educate them about local food systems.

“There are many reasons to support local foods. These include supporting local farmers, keeping our rural areas rural and maintaining community interactions,” stated a press release from the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Dare County Center. “Besides, we all know that money spent locally tends to stay in the local economy, creating jobs and supporting local businesses.”

For more information, follow the Coastal Food Policy Council on Facebook. Each day during local foods week, a local food grown or caught in the local area will be highlighted with recipes and fun facts related to the food. Local foods week also involves asking citizens to make a commitment to use local foods in new ways throughout the week, so check back daily for ways to become involved. In addition, information about community, economic and environmental benefits to supporting locally grown or caught products will be shared.
