Elly the Jelly, created by Dunes of Dare Garden Club, started out as litter found on Outer Banks beaches. The creation includes a broken umbrella, plastic bottles, discarded sand toys, toothbrushes, deflated helium balloons, Mardi Gras beads, flip flops, sunglasses, bits of ribbon, bottle caps, rope and twine, among other debris.

“The gardeners of Dunes of Dare Garden Club were sad to see their precious shores so littered and unpleasant for them and their tourist friends who came to visit,” stated information from the club. “Members of the garden club had already spent time keeping their main road clean of litter, especially being sure to pick up plastic bags which can be harmful to many kinds of animals. With such conservation in mind, their vision fell upon the beaches.”

A group of garden club members went to see sculptures made from trash on display in The Norfolk Botanical Gardens on day. The sculptures were beautiful objects that reused the many items that had been littering public areas.

Some garden club members got together and said, “We can do that!” They asked all their friends to collect litter and trash from their beaches and bring them to one place where it could all be sorted and a plan made for their sculpture.

Group members planned and worked for almost a year, slowly sculpting Elly the Jelly – something beautiful made from the ugly litter and trash left on lovely Outer Banks beaches.

“Dunes of Dare Garden Club: Doing our part to reduce, reuse, and recycle in order to keep our oceans and beaches clean.”
