Exodus 6:2, “God also said to Moses, ‘I am the LORD.’”

In the next few verses, God speaks to Moses to encourage him, and gives a message to encourage the Israelites. To be sure, everyone here is disappointed. I cannot imagine Moses think God was sending him on an easy task here, why in the world would Pharaoh release his slaves at the request of Moses? (I wonder who Pharaoh thought Moses was: simply another Midianite, since he came from that region and lived there 40 years; an Egyptian, since he was raised in the palace of another Pharaoh; maybe an escaped Israelite slave who has come back, but he would be easy enough to recapture or kill.) I am not sure, but it is clear God is protecting Moses and Aaron at this time.

And God tells Moses, “I am the Lord.” That is who God said he was when Moses asked back in the desert in chapter three. God simply is, he always is. It is not that God was, as though he was someone in the past. Though in fact, God was in the past, but for God it was the present, just like this present is for us. And it is not that God will just be in the future. Though God will always exist, again just as he does now. It is not really the future for God because he is already there, just as like we are in the present. This stretches our minds.

You and I are not the same person we were yesterday or 10, 20, or 50 years ago. We have grown, learned, matured, experienced things; and those things make us who we are today. And we are not the person we will be tomorrow, or next week, on in a year or five or 10. In fact, some of us might not even be here then. But if we are, we will have grown, learned, experienced even more, and hopefully we will be better people for that. But that is not the case with God. God is unchanging, there is no room or need for improvement, there is nothing else God needs to learn, nothing he needs to experience. God is perfect just as he is. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Father, thank you for being unchangeable. In Jesus’ name, amen.
